Welcome
Portland Square is a Grade One listed Georgian square, perfectly designed around its centrepiece - St Pauls Church (often referred to as "the wedding cake church" ) which, having recently been restored, now contains Circomedia - the international circus artistes school. It lies just off Newfoundland Street (the end of the M32) and is close to the Broadmead shopping area. Parking in the Square is plentiful, though metered, of course.
Cosies Wine Bar is to be found in the basement of number 34 Portland Square. The business was established in the early 1980's and maintains a high reputation for excellent food served at lunchtime, a watering hole for office workers in the early evening and then, late into the night, as the coolest music venue in the City.
Brick vaulted ceilings, flagstone floors and the old church pews, which give seating for 60 people, have created the ambience now reflected in its name. The bar serves a wide range of wines from throughout the world from £2.60 a glass and £9.50 a bottle upwards. These are accompanied by draught Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Fosters and Guinness. There is a revolving cask ale programme and a large choice of soft drinks.
All food is freshly prepared on the premises by the Head Chef, James Cupper, with dishes of an international flavour. There is always a "Chef's specials" available daily. The main menu is changed seasonally. You will almost certainly be greeted by the proprietor, Martin Gibson.
OPEN ALL DAY Monday to Friday. Breakfast available from 10am to noon; lunchtime food from noon to 2pm, then drinks afterwards until 02:00 (Mondays and Tuesdays closing at 10:00pm). Saturday and Sunday open at 8pm to 02:00 (there may be a small door charge in the evenings).
